The first members of a 150-strong international contingent of artists have already arrived for Wexford's Art in the Open Festival starting on Monday, July 28.

Proving that the Plein Air event is a boost to tourism, professional US artists Becky Joyce from Arizona and Dot Courson from Mississipi came early to enjoy a tour of Ireland before settling down to paint in Wexford.

The pair are among 20 Americans taking part in the 7th Wexford festival and will be joined over the August bank holiday weekend by artists from Russia, Jamaica, Spain, France, Italy, the U.K. and all over Ireland.

The week-long schedule of outdoor painting will start in Courtown on Monday, followed by visits to Graiguenamanagh, Enniscorthy, Ballyhack, Clonegal and Wexford town on the following days.

The artists will paint coastal scenes, pastoral landscapes, villages, castles, gardens and towns.

A gala exhibition of the created work will be held in Whites Hotel on bank holiday Monday, August 4.

Saturday, August 2 has been designated family fun day in the Selskar area of Wexford town with a 'quick draw' in aid of Wexford Hospice Homecare.

Arists will draw quick sketches of scenes and people in return for donations.

The entry fee for participating artists is €5 and artistic members of the public are welcome to take part without having registered as a participating member of Art in the Open.
