Mayor honours World Championship medallists
There was a Mayoral Reception at The Heritage Park recently to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of the young members of Wexford Kung Fu and Kickboxing Centre who managed to claim a number of medals while representing Ireland at the World Kickboxing Championships last year.
Mayor George Lawlor paid tribute to the group and their parents and the sacrifices that they have made to represent their county and country at the highest level. The majority of praise was aimed at Mark Rowe, James Scalon, Brian Murphy, Dale White, Rebecca Rowe and Clara O'Doherty - all of whom represented Ireland at the World Kickboxing Championships in Taranto, Italy in October.
Of those taking part, Mark and Rebecca managed to bring home bronze medals and Dale managed a bronze and a silver however, perhaps most astonishing of all was Clara O'Doherty who returned a double world champion with two gold medals - one for the girls u12 individual event and the other for the girls u12 team event.
'There's a lot of dedication involved to get to that level,' said Clara's proud mum Gillian. 'She trains six times a week and she also plays county football and ballet, so sometimes I feel like I'm never out of the car! It was lovely to see the Mayor recognise all their hard work though, because it takes a lot for them to train so much at that age with homework and their other activities.'
