'Forgotten' remembered in new book on workhouse

A NEW book detailing the history of the Wexford Workhouse and its connections to the Paupers' Graveyard in Coolcotts, was launched at the Arts Centre on Thursday night.

'The Forgotten Ones - From the Workhouse to the Grave' is the culmination of 15 months' work by the Celtic Women's Group.

FAB Outreach Worker Annie Reynolds, who coordinated the project, said some of the accounts of life at the Wexford Union Workhouse were fictionalised, but all were based on fact.

It is not known how many people were buried at in the Paupers' Graveyard which was in use from 1842 to 1939

The book is available at the Wexford Book Centre, priced at €15.
