MARITIME enthusiasts from all over Wexford and even further afield gathered at Hotel Rosslare to witness the launch of a fascinating new book on one of Ireland's key shipping companies.
'Irish Shipping Ltd - A Fleet History' is the end product of a five-year project undertaken by the Rosslare Maritime Enthusiasts - namely Brian Cleare, Leo Coy and brothers Brian and John Boyce.
The book gives a detailed history of each of the 51 ships operated by Irish Shipping Ltd in the course of the company's 43-year existence from its humble beginnings in 1941 to its sad demise in 1984. As well as that it also provides a wonderful insight into life at sea during the war years and how the brave crews kept Ireland supplied with essential goods.
Over the past few years, the authors have gathered together over four hundred photographs covering every ship in the fleet, many of which have never been published before.
On the night, the group were joined by a capacity crowd who took great pleasure in leafing through copies of the book and discussing some of the vessels which were featured inside. Captain Jim O'Leary, who worked for Irish Shipping Ltd before the company's demise, was on hand to give the book its official launch and he was extremely impressed with the level of work that the authors had put into the book and the detail with which they explored every aspect of the company through each decade.
The authors were delighted with the turnout for the launch and are hoping the book will prove the ideal gift for Christmas. Copies can be purchased from The Book Centre in Wexford or from Rosslare Harbour Maritime Heritage Centre.
