GARDAI launched a major manhunt yesterday for a gang of three armed raiders who held up Courtown Post Office, and made off with more than €3,000 in cash.
The masked men pointed a gun at the terrified Post Office Assistant and thrust a knife at shop proprietor Declan Dunbar (77), while trying to cut their way through a door with a con-saw, into the Post Office which is located inside the General Store.
They then fled the scene in a green Mazda 323, which had earlier been stolen in Arklow. It was found shortly afterwards at the end of Sandy Lane in nearby Ardamine.
Gardaí quickly set up checkpoints across the region and conducted door to door enquiries in estates in Riverchapel, in Seamount, and along the Sandy Lane. Witnesses are being urged to come forward with whatever information they may have.
'All calls will be treated in confidence,' said a spokesperson for Gorey Gardaí.
'We are keeping an open mind as to whether or not they left the area in another vehicle, or if they went down to the beach or into a nearby estate.'
