Two billion years of Hook Head

The landscape around the Hook Head lighthouse is highlighted in a book that attempts to explain how the area became so beautiful.
'Geology of Ireland, a field guide' has been issued at a price of €19.99 by Collins Press.
Authors Pat Meere, Ivor MacCarthy, John Reavy, Alistair Allen and Ken Higgs are all practising geologists.
While the 13th century lighthouse may seem old to casual observers, a mere 800 year span is almost yesterday to the rocky quintet.
The book offers a window into the two billion year history of Ireland's countryside.
Hook Head, with its 'well-bedded bioclastic limestones' is one of 17 sites chosen to highlight with full colour illustration in the book.
The writers hope that their efforts will encourage their readers to follow in their footsteps and venture out into the field to look at rocks more closely.
