Order of Malta honoured for 75 years of service

THEY are a familiar sight on the streets of Wexford and last week, Wexford Borough Council honoured the Order of Malta for its 75 years of service to the town.

The Wexford branch of the Order was set up in 1939 to provide first aid training and faclities and to assist people in the community.

'For 75 years the volunteers have carried out those duties with great passion and dilgence,' said Mayor, Cllr. George Lawlor.

The Heritage Park ceremony was attended by 40 members of the Order, which is headed by officer in charge David O'Grady, who spoke on its behalf.

Order of Malta medals were presented to Imelda O'Connor and posthumously to the late Tom Hartigan, the award accepted by his son Ger.
