VHI HEALTHCARE paid €16.4 million in claims for Sligo customers last year. The biggest spend involved claims for the treatment of cancer amounting to almost €3.1m.
This included almost €600,000 spent on claims for breast, bladder and prostate malignancy.
Orthopaedic procedures including replacement knee and hip joints, fractures and back problems accounted for a further €2.2m of total spend.
Followed closely were heart and circulatory conditions, which cost €1.98m to treat.
Claims benefit of €890,000 was allocated to cover over 320 claims for arthritis and rheumatism.
Customers from Sligo admitted to hospital for treatment of digestive system problems such as stomach ulcers, gallstones, inflammatory bowel disease etc., incurred costs of nearly €1.8m. Additionally, €1.3m was allocated for claims associated with the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
This included expenses relating to the treatment of strokes, brain haemorrhage, damage to nerves and many other conditions.
Some €1.5m was allowed towards the investigation of non-specific symptoms and illnesses, and claims for which no final diagnosis could be established.
Mental health issues for people living in Sligo, including treatment for depression, anxiety, personality disorders and psychoses, came to €734,000.
Respiratory problems that included pneumonia, asthma, viral infections etc cost over €1m to treat.
Other claims payouts for Vhi Healthcare customers in Sligo included: €413,000 for treatment of eye conditions; €426,000 for treatment of skin conditions; €304,000 paid out on maternity deliveries, including complications; €278,000 for 194 customers in Sligo who suffered slipped discs; €173,000 for 184 customers needing treatment for haemorrhoids (piles); €220,000 for treatment of customers with pneumonia; €156,000 for 108 customers with men's health issues; €212,000 for 146 customers hospitalised with acute respiratory infections; €173,000 for 85 customers needing surgery to correct congenital issues present since birth.
Even fit people can incur claims costs as over €434,000 was paid out on 219 claims for customers from Sligo injured in falls, domestic accidents, workplace injuries, on the farm, or while engaged in sports and leisure activities.
