AFTER ALL the spectacle and glamour of Galway race week, Sligo takes centre-stage this week with a thrilling two-day meeting getting under way on Wednesday.
Two days of top class racing, plus the added attraction of Ladies Day tomorrow, should attract huge crowds to the scenic Cleveragh course.
The first race on a seven race all flat card today gets off at 5.40pm. The feature event is the Connacht Oaks Fillies Handicap of €30,000 sponsored by the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund. Other sponsored races this evening are the Foley's Bar and Off Licence handicap, the Sligo Park Hotel Handicap and the EBF two years old Maiden.
There will be no shortage of glamour for Ladies Day tomorrow with a Best Dressed Ladies prize sponsored by Littlewoods Ireland. The first prize is a €2,000 shopping spree with Littlewoods Ireland while nine finalists will receive a €100 Littlewoods Ireland voucher. The celebrity fashion judge is Sile Seoige.
The first race on tomorrow's all National Hunt cardgets under way at 5.35pm. There are four sponsored races, including the Guinness Sligo Handicap of €20,000 over two and a half miles. Other sponsored races are the Martin Reilly BMW Dealer Novice Hurdle, the Martinstown Opportunity Maiden hurdle and the Strandhill Lodge and Suites Maiden hurdle.
Gates, restaurant and bars open each day at 3pm. Admission prices are €15 for adults and €10 for OAPS and students. There is no admission charge for children. The carnival atmosphere will be enhanced by Man in Black who are providing music before and after racing each day.
