IT Sligo 0-15; NUIG 0-13 IT SLIGO warmed up for the start of their Sigerson Cup campaign in the best possible fashion with a hard earned win over NUI Gaway in the third round of the Connacht FBD League at Ballyhaunis on Sunday.
It was the side's first win in the competition and comes as a timely boost for manager, Michael Moyles, as he prepares his squad for their Sigerson showdown with NUI Maynooth next Tuesday.
Five points from Sligo attacker Stephen Coen proved crucial in the end as the Galway students staged a sterling comeback in the last seven minutes, John Egan's accuracy from frees into a stiff breeze leaving just two points between the sides at the final whistle.
Sligo held a three-point lead at the break, 0-9 to 0-6,and two quick points from Coen and another from Michael Forde after the restart put the Sligo students in total control.
After Coen, former Sligo panellist David Maye and Forde built on that first-period work with some good scores in the third quarter, NUI Galway rallied in the last 10 minutes as Egan and substitute Kieran Murtagh set about reducing the deficit. Gary Keane landed a great point a minute after his introduction to settle IT Sligo, but they were never in danger of losing, despite Egan's late efforts.
