THERE ARE now delays of up to 12 months in processing appeals for key social welfare supports, a Sligo councillor has pointed out.
Hundreds of fulltime carers, hundreds of people with disabilities and hundreds of people with longterm illness have been waiting for at least a year to have their appeals for State support processed, according to Clr. Jerry Lundy.
The longest delays were in appeals for the disability allowance.
"These delays are hitting the most vulnerable," he said.
He proposed that the council call on Social Protection Minister Joan Burton to fasttrack the appeals.
