Paddy Bird, a young 12 year old from Ballicar who at the start of the golfing year had a golf handicap of 25. By July a mere 3 and a half months later he had reduced his handicap to 13.
This is an astonishing reduction of 12 shots in under 4 months. He then, unfortunately, fractured his hip which effectively terminated his golf for the rest of the 2012 season. Obviously Paddy has worked extremely hard on all aspects of his game under the tutelage of Assistant Pro Martin McTiernan. Now 13 years old, Paddy is back firing on all cylinders. God help the rest of us in 2013.
Ryder Cup Captains: Very few golf clubs in the world can boast a Ryder Cup Captain as a member. How many Clubs can boast 2 We can. Honorary member, Sir Nick Faldo, served as European Ryder Cup Captain in 2008 in Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville Kentucky. The European team went down to its worst defeat since 1981 - 16.5 to 11.5.
Recently, the USGA announced Tom Watson, another honorary member of ours, as its Ryder Cup Captain for 2014.
Tom already served as Captain leading the US to its last win on European soil in 1993 at the Belfry. Clearly recent defeats have stung the USGA and they have called up Tom to serve again. He will be the oldest Ryder Cup Captain in history! Many members remember Tom when he visited here in 1987 accompanied by his friend and mentor Byron Nelson.
