Coola earn hard fought win against an accomplished Boyle side on a wet afternoon in Riverstown.
COOLA PPS 2-13; ABBEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 3-8 COOLA POS
Trailing by a single point going into the final seconds, Keith Conlon's free kick went in off the crossbar into the net to seal the most dramatic of victories. The goal was harsh on Boyle who will surely rue missed chances in the beginning of the second half. The game got off to a cagey start and the two teams could not be separated after the early exchanges. After ten minutes, Michael Kilkenny scored a goal for Coola to hand them a three point lead.
More points followed from Daniel Willis and Mark Mullaney among others to hand Coola a five point lead going into the half-time break. However, Coola were unable to significantly extend their lead despite some early dominance in the second half, the closest opportunity coming when Michael Kilkenny hit the post from distance, and Boyle took full advantage. Three goals in very quickly succession handed Boyle an unlikely lead which they kept for nearly the remainder of the game. Coola were handed the opportunity to regain the lead shortly after when they were awarded a penalty. However, Jamie Gaffney was unable to add to his tally, miscuing his shot wide of the target.
A point from Conor Turner halved Coola's deficit to a single point.
Then, in the final seconds of the game, Coola were awarded a free kick from distance after a foul was committed from a previously well-disciplined Boyle defence. Keith Conlon stepped up and the ball dropped into the net for a dramatic winner.
