A GAME that started brightly eventually fizzled out as Calry /St Josephs took control of their SHC semi-final encounter with Western Gaels on Sunday to comfortably book their place in this year's SHC semi-final.
Although Western Gaels opened the scoring in Tourlestrane with John Gordon registering a point that could as easily have been a goal, Calry St Josephs took the next three scores on the trot compliments of Damien Burke, Keith Raymond and Kevin Gilmartin. Pointed frees by Aidan Morrison, either side of a Raymond kept Western Gaels in touch.
From the 24th minute onwards however, it was the reigning champions who began to get on top and their better support play ensured that Western Gaels remained scoreless for the remainder of the half. During this period, Calry/St Josephs put 1-5 up on the scoreboard, with points from play by Danny Keown, Ronan Cox, Damien Burke adding to two Raymond frees. The goal came in added time when Burke gave Thomas Ryan no chance having been set up by Kevin Gilmartin
Things went from bad to worse for Western Gaels in the second half. Damien Burke pointed almost straight from the throw-in, and Keown got his second point of the game moments later. A Morrison free in the fifth minute was Western Gael's only response. Indeed Western Gaels would not score again until the last minute of the game when Morrison again converted a free. In the intervening period, Calry/St Josephs racked up the scores. By the 20th minute, the title holders had chalked up a score of 2-14, their goal coming from a well-struck effort from 20m by sub Thomas Kelly.
Dominating matters in virtually all positions on the field, Calry/St Josephs scored at will over the next 10 minutes. Cox contributed 1-2, and David Collery and Keith Raymond each contributed two points to ease their side into the final, 3-20 to 0-5.
