Dramatic Cup win for Fiddler's Creek

FIDDLER'S REMARKABLE dominance of Astro league football in Sligo and the North West continued as they won the Socrates Healthcare Informatics Cup for the first time after a dramatic penalty shoot out win against the G.S.S. The result was so hard on G.S.S. who were arguably the better side in normal time. It was the G.S.S. who took the lead in the game thanks to a goal from Declan McMonigle. Former Sligo Rovers man Jim Sheridan equalised for Fiddler's.
The prolific Conor Jordan then put James Conneely's men back in front but Gerry McGowan netted to ensure that normal time saw the sides finish level at 2-2. That meant that for the first time in the history of this competition penalties were needed to decide the winner. Lee Marshall and Ian Rossiter scored their kicks for Fiddlers while Dermot O'Connor and Clement McCormack replied for the G.S.S. Jordan's goal touch though deserted him in the shoot-out as he missed and Mark Rooney scored to give Enda Scanlon's side a 3-2 win while Glen Shannon lifted yet another piece of silverware.
Fiddler's and the G.S.S. reached the final courtesy of semi-final wins against Hargadon's (Calry) and the Belfry respectively. A goal from Damien Shannon was enough to give Fiddler's a 1-0 win in what was a very edgy game while Conor Jordan scored two for the G.S.S. in their 3-1 victory. Their other was an own goal while David Adams scored for the Belfry.
It wasn't all Cup action as there were three League games played. Jackie's Cutting Point got their first win of the season when they came from 2-0 down to beat Lick My White Gorilla's 3-2. Goals from Noel Kenny and Ciaran Costello had the Gorilla's two to the good but a brace from Ross Melly levelled the game. Robbie Clarke then scored the winner from a free kick. In what was a close fought game between Killanaskully Wanderers and Forest Celtic it was always going to take something special to decide it.
And that proved the case with Daniel McDonagh getting a goal of the season contender to give Killanaskully a 1-0 win. Lang's Bar remain unbeaten in the league as they drew 1-1 with Boston United. Jimmy Dunleavy scored for them with Colin Feehily getting the leveller for Boston. Another side in good form are S.T.S.G. United who have now won three on the bounce thanks to their 4-1 win against I.T. Sligo. Gerard Murphy, Bernie McDonagh, Amos and Joe Farrell all got one each for United.
