Sligo kickboxers strike gold in Italy

Brother and sister team, Dessie and Aine Leonard, hit another golden run in the WAKO 'Best Fighter' World Championships in Italy.
Aine scopped two gold medals while Dessie's haul included one gold, one silver and one bronze.
Over 2,000 fighters from all over the world took part in the prestigious championships so it was an outstanding achievement by the Colloney Kickboxing club members.
Dessie, the current World and European champion, beat five opponents on his way to winning gold in the seniors -74kg semi-light contact division.
He was on the trail of another medal in the -69kgs light contact category, fighting off four opponents to claim a shot at the title. However, he was narrowly defeated in the final by a Dutch opponent.
The Sligo fighter went on to win a bronze medal in another category, earning three podium places.
Dessie's sister, Aine, who is also the current World and European Champion, produced another magnificent performance.
She beat four opponents on her way to the final of the Best Fighter junior -60kgs light contact category. She overcame an opponent from Slovenia in the decider to claim first spot on the podium.
Not content with just one gold medal, Aine was in top form again in the -65kig division, defeating three opponents on her way to winning her second title.
She also won a bronze medal in the senior -60kg category.
Another fighter from Collooney Club, Alex Block, was also in action at the Championships.
She won her first bout in the -60kg senior light contact category before losing her second fight by a narrow margin to the eventual champion. She also narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the -65kg light contact division.
