OVER ONE thousand enthusiastic primary school children from all over the county converged on the IT Sligo athletics track on Friday to showcase their athletic ability at the SuperValu Primary Schools Athletics Festival.

This was the ninth year for the athletics relay team event and the festival continues to grow in popularity each year with a record thirty eight schools represented this year. County Sligo Athletics Association, Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and Youth Sport West were on hand to oversee the running of the event with support from IT Sligo and volunteers from transition year at Mercy College Sligo.

It was an event full of colour as all athletes wore specially designed t-shirts, which were made possible through generous sponsorship from SuperValu supermarkets. Fun, enjoyment and participation was to the forefront throughout the event and certificates of participation were presented to all athletes in recognition of their sporting efforts.

Schools representing all corners of the county participated in the event and the organisers acknowledged the effort and dedication of teachers, in entering and preparing school teams for the athletics festival.

At the conclusion of the events an Olympic torch which was part of the journey to the London Olympics 2012 was taken on a lap of honour around the track by hundreds of enthusiastic and excited children involved in the festival.
