Saidhbh takes another title

Ballinacarrow boxing club's rising star, Saidhbh Greene, continued her rapid progresss by winning the Irish under 18 Championship in Dublin last week.

She beat highly-rated Rebecca Gorman, in a thrilling final.

The Ballinacarrow fighter started at a blistering pace, storming into a 5-1 lead after the first round.

But her opponent staged a spirited rally in rounds two and three.

It call came down to an all-or-nothing scenario in round four and Saidhbh dug deep to take the title on a 2-1 split decision. The 16-year-old fighter, who is coached at Ballinacarrow boxing club by Kevin Mullen, has won seven national titles at various age groups over the last five years. She maintained her outstanding form this season.

Last month, she won the girls national under 16 title in impressive fashion. She beat reigning European champion, Grainne Gavin from Castlebar in the semi-final before taking the title when her opponent failed to weigh in for the final. The Cootehall native followed up with another victory over Gavin, this time in the semi-final of the U.18 national championships.
