Rally awards take centre stage
THE SLIGO Pallets Border Rally Championship 2012 came to a conclusion with a prize-giving dinner dance in The Sligo Park Hotel and attended by over 250 Rally Competitors and enthusiasts from Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Cavan, Monaghan and Newry.
Among those present were five times Irish Tarmac Rally Champion Mr Eugene Donnelly and his navigator local man Mr Paul Kiely, the President of Motorsport Ireland, Mr Joe Corcoran, and the Mayor of Monaghan Cllr. Hugh Mc Ilvanney. M.C. on the night was Mr Patsy McIntyre of the Monaghan Rally Club and Chairman of the Border Rally Championship Committee.
In his address to the large audience, Mr McIntyre recalled that this year's event was the 21st Anniversary of the Border Rally Championship and said it had grown from strength to strength over the last 21 years.
He paid tribute to Sligo Pallets Proprietor Mr Andrew Mullen and his wife Elaine Doherty for their sponsorship of the Border Rally Championship for the second year running.
Senator Marc Mac Sharry sent a letter of apology at being unable to attend the event due to prior commitments and wished the Championship continued success for the future.
The 2012 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship was won by Co. Monaghan's Arthur Kierans and his son Mac having been dominant in Class 12 for the past two Years. Three Class wins and a second place finish were enough for them to retain the Title. The duo became only the first team to clinch the Border Rally Championship twice having also won the 2011 event. N
The Team Award was presented to The Limelight Team.
Prizes were awarded to winners and runners up in eleven classes and overall Championship winners by members of the Championship Committee including Mr Brendan Flynn, his daughter Ms Brenda Flynn, Mr Padraig Boylan, Motorsport Ireland President Mr Joe Corcoran and five times Irish Tarmac Rally Champion Mr Eugene Donnelly.
Elaine Doherty used the occasion to highlight the need for Suicide Awareness and through donations made on the night raised €1500 which will be donated to S.T.O.P.
In his speech Mr Mullen of Sligo Pallets recalled that a very good friend of his and a Founding Member of the Border Rally Championship Committee Mr Danny Caddye had passed away recently and to mark Mr Caddye's involvement in Motorsport he has introduced a "Spirit of The Rally Award"
The Late Mr Caddye's Wife Ann and their son Sean presented the specially hand crafted Mullingar Pewter award to this year's "Spirit of the Rally" Award winners.
It was very fitting to see the trophy heading to Donegal to brother partnership of Trevor and Kenny Bustard.
Mr. Mullen committed to continuing his Sponsorship of the Border Rally Championship for the next three years.
