THE NORTH Sligo AC women's novice team made the long trip to Adamstown in Co Wexford to take part in the national novice crosscountry championships over 4k on Sunday last.
Despite several setbacks to many members of the team in the last 3 weeks they all made it to the starting line.Conditions were ideal and despite the rain the previous week the course held up surprisingly well
.In 2010 the team finished 10th and last year they finished 5th so they were very hopeful of improving on that this year.Aisling Van Rensburg the Sligo road league champion and womens fit for life 5k series champion showed that she is as adept over crosscountry as the road as she led her team home in 17th position, she was followed to the finish line 2 seconds later by Una McCool with another great performance in 19th position,Sarah Healy had her best ever run to finish 25th and the 4th scorer
Elizebeth McCabe ran a courageous and brave race despite suffering from a rather heavy cold to finish 49th and kept the team in the hunt for medals. Andrea Horgan showed what a great prospect she is by finishing 51st, Linda Lally had a good strong run to finish 72nd and Anne Byrne put in a good effort finishing in 89th position.
The team finished joint 3rd with Sportsworld Dublin on 110 points but lost it on count back, the first 3 teams to finish were from Dublin, and they can be proud of the fact that they were the first team outside of Dublin to finish.Catherine Donelan and Alision O'Sullivan had a great runs in the Waterford half marathon 2 weeks ago, with Donelan clocking 1 hour 42 minutes and O'Sullivan clocking 1 hour 48 minutes.
