New Year's Day tennis raises charity funds
THE 2013 Tennis Calendar got off to a flying start on New Year's Day with a full muster of players for the first Mixed Doubles of the season. Played in unusually mild weather, the event was held to raise funds for the local Alzheimer's Fund.
The Christmas excesses were quickly banished with vigorous tennis of high standard across all courts.
Edel Hackett made a welcome return to the court after a lengthy lay-off, and showed she has lost none of her masterful strokes when partnering Liam Farrell to come a close second in their group. Winners, on count-back, were Ann Barry and Christy Hennessy.
It was also a very close affair in the second group, with just three points separating all the pairings. Kay Curly and James Doyle did just enough to win the section, edging out Paula Nairn and Mel Mc Keown.
In the top section, Marina Swann and Eamon McCafferty had a convincing 18 points tally to win the group, with Noreen Cassidy and Kris Klodnicki in runner up spot. Weekly Competitions. Well done to the winners of the weekly events, with Jo Mullan and Ann Mc Daniel topping their sections on Wednesday night. Sheila Mc Cormack and Marian Coyne won the A section on the Monday night outing, with Delia Blake and Rose Kinsella taking the B Group. In the C section, Shauna Mackey and Winnie Connolly were to the forefront.
All weekly competitions are now back in full swing, and the usual lists are on the Board.
Thanks to the organisers of those events, which are the core competitive events in the Club, week in week out.
The 2013 Winter League starts on Sunday week and entries will close on Friday next. The list is currently posted on the Notice Board.
