Sligo Rovers new chairman, Tony Quinn, is asking members and supporters to help build up a 'war chest' so that the League Champions can help build on the momentum of last season.
In an appeal to supporters, the chairman says the strong start made by the club last year was helped by a successful 100€ appeal. And he has called on supporters to again contribute 100€ to help cover the cash flow challenge which emerges at this time every season.
In his statement the new chairman, who has a long history of involvement at The Shwogrounds, promises to do his best for the club. He confirms that his predecessor, Dr Dermot Kelly, is remaining on the management committee as vice chairman and says the ambition is to build on what has been achieved in recent years.
His full statement reads: "I am honoured to be the newly-elected chairman of Sligo Rovers and I promise to do my very best for the club. My predecessor, Dr Dermot Kelly, is remaining on the board as vice chairman and our ambition is to build on what has been achieved in recent years.
"This time last year, before the season began, we contacted you and all the members of Sligo Rovers. We asked for a contribution of €100 to help cover the cash flow challenge which emerges at this time every year and puts us in 'catch-up' mode for the rest of the season.
"The €12,000 received covered many pre-season training expenses and gave the club breathing space during what was one of the most momentous seasons in our history.
"On behalf of Sligo Rovers I am asking you to be generous again. As we prepare to defend our league title, we are asking members and supporters to contribute €100 towards a "war chest."
"As the year progresses, we can look forward to revenue from League winners' prize money and Champions League qualification. But the opening months of the season can be a difficult trading period – it is also the time when a club can build momentum. The strategy of a strong start worked for us last year and that's why we are approaching you, to help us do the same again.
"As a management committee, made up of volunteers, we are all committed to making the club the very best that it can be. Our secret weapon in recent years has been the bond between the supporters and the club. Our special relationship has allowed us to compete against clubs with greater resources.
"In what are very difficult economic times, if you could contribute €100 towards our 'fighting fund' it would be greatly appreciated. And you have my word that the money raised will be used wisely. A contribution can be Paid by credit card using the PayPal system on the club website www.sligorovers.com , posted to Sligo Rovers, Sligo Showgrounds, Church Hill, Sligo , given to one of the management committee members handed in to the club office. Each payment received will be recorded and acknowledged. Sincere thanks for your support to date and here's hoping for another great season"
