The National Track and Field championships at Santry Stadium in Dublin last week-end evoked special memories for Sligo's former international athlete, Roddy Gaynor, who exactly twenty years ago won his first national senior title over 800 meters at the same venue.

In a tactical race that day, the leaders ran the first lap in 56.2 seconds, but when Gaynor broke for home with 300 meters remaining, he held the lead all the way to the finish, running the last lap in 54 seconds.

The winning time on the day was 1.50.2. The winning time on Sunday, twenty years on, was 1.49.3.

With this breakthrough, Roddy went on to the make several international appearances for Ireland during the eighties.
