Mccann beaten by Number 1 seed in World Championship

SLIGO'S INVOLVEMENT in the world handball championships ended on Saturday when Ballymote's Francis McCann was defeated by the number 1 seed Paul Williams from the U.S.A by 2-1 in the quarter finals of the Golden Masters A singles one wall event.

Castleconnor's Oisin Quinn teamed up with Joacquin Murphy as the duo reached the semi-finals of the Golden Masters one-wall doubles. Quinn & Murphy were beaten by the number 3 seeds in Conor McDonnell & Cormac McMahon (Monaghan/Armagh) by 2 games to 1.

A notable achievement for the veteran Castleconnor club player. Oisin's son Odhran reached 2 quarter-finals in the Boys U-13 singles & doubles one-wall events.

The World championships proved an outstanding success with Cavan's Paul Brady winning his 4th successive World Men's open singles title with the defeat of U.S.A's Luis Moreno.

Antrim's Aisling Reilly defeated clubmate Fiona Shannon to win her 1st ladies open singles denying Shannon in her place in history of winning 4 ladies singles titles in a row.

Sligo team members that took part in this years World handball championships were Oisin Quinn, Odran Quinn, Aoife Quinn, Martin Cooney all Castleconnor, Shane Bruen Collooney, Francis McCann Ballymote and Gavin Cawley St. Mary's
