Kickboxers in winning form
Sligo Kickboxing club Sligo Mugendo travelled to City West, Dublin recently to compete in the Kickboxing Ireland (KBI) national team selection for the Junior and Senior ring sports Irish team.
In the junior sections, the club had representatives competing in the points division, light contact and the full contact.
In the younger cadets points section, Nora Walsh from Dromahair was successful in winning a national title at -32kgs.
In the light contact, Roseena Mc Naire and Cathal Fitzpatrick continued to dominate their divisions and became national champions for the second year in sucession.
In the full contact division, Billy Dolan Geary brought success to himself and his club when he won the -67 kg belt after a tough fight to become national champion for his first time.
In the senior ring, sports full contact Padraig Keaney competed at 71 kg and had to be at his best to beat Shane Smith an experienced fighter from Global Kickboxing Dublin, to win the final on a split decision.
The other fighter in the full contact was Niall McDermott, who was last year's fighter of the year in KBI and perhaps because of this there was no other fighter in his category this year, so he retained his title.
The club had a number of fighters who won bronze medals such as Michael Jinks, Niall Gonley and Hewed Mahmood and some who fought well but were beaten by more experienced opponents like Noelle Harkin, Leandro Andal and Dominique Jedrol. Sensei Michael mc Dermot received his 7th degree Wako Dan Grade.
This is the thirtieth year of Sligo's oldest kickboxing club and its members once again continue to demonstrate their success in points fighting and both light and full contact.
The sport has been growing in strength in Sligo with many talented kickboxers winning titles.
