IT was a golden weekend for Sligo's Special Olympians.
A total of 29 athletes from the Yeats County were on Team Connacht at the Ireland Games in Limerick.
And, there was plenty to celebrate after another spectacularly successful event.
Among those winning gold were Tony Lynagh (Mens 800m walk / silver 400m), Thomas Connolly, Nightriders Special Olympics Club (Trail ride), Mary Kate Dolan, Cartron, (ladies doubles/ mixed doubles badminton) and John Martin, Ballymote,(mens doubles/ mixed doubles).
There was further glory for Sligo with Michele Cummins, Shuttle Stars SOC, winning gold in singles badminton and second in mixed doubles and Kay Kenny, Splashing Penquins, winning the 25 meter front crawl in the swimming section.
Caitlin Walsh , St Dympna's Special School, was the local Tourlestrane hero as she won gold in the 400m walk and javelin.
Jennifer Mulligan, Shuttle Stars, was first in ladies singles and doubles in badminton. Patricia Sweeney of Nightriders took first and second in equestrian
Bairbre Callagy, Sligo Fairways SOC, was first in golf (9 hole) and Margaret Carr first in 18 hole.
A number of Sligo athletes took other prizes, including Joseph Cullen, Splashing Penquins, third in the 25 m butterfly and second in the relay.
Noel Coen, Nightriders, was placed second on two occasions in equestrian events.
Four athletes from Sligo also received challenge award medals for taking part in the motor activities training programme.
