1 CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Con Brio launch their 14th Sligo Music Series this Friday in the Canis Major, Clarion Hotel. The Irish Chamber Orchestra, led by Katherine Hunka, return to Sligo for another outstanding performance. This is a force to reckoned with on the international music scene. Tickets are €20 (students €10) and they can be obtained from the Hawk's Well Theatre, phone 071 9161518.
2 ON YOUR MARKS
You have the choice of two races on Saturday next. The first, a 5km fun run and walk, starts at 12.30pm in I.T. Sligo. Registration from 10am. A second race, sees runners trek 10km from St. Anne's Church to Coney Island and back. Walkers start at 2.30pm, runners 3pm. Registration from 12-2pm at Sligo Rugby Club. Proceeds in aid of the Church's restoration fund.
3 SNOW WHITE
The popular Lambert Puppet Theatre bring their latest show to the new Art Deco Theatre in Ballymote on Sunday at 2.30pm. The company are touring Snow White and Bosco. The group have strong Sligo connections having being founded by the late Eugene Lambert of the Wanderly Wagon fame. Paula Lambert was the 'Bosco' voice on TV for 17 years and will make a nostalgic appearance in the opening part of the show.
4 FORTUNES AND MISFORTUNES
Killala Players present the hilarious play in the Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, on Thursday. The threeact comedy is guaranteed to make you laugh, while also fundraising for the school's new canteen and computer room. Doors at 7.30pm, admission €10, €20 family rate.
5 GANGSTER SQUAD
It's Los Angeles, 1949. Sean Penn plays a ruthless Brooklyn-born mob king, Mickey Cohen. He runs the show, reaping gains from drugs, guns, prostitutes and every wire bet west of Chicago. Co-stars the excellent Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. Out Friday in GCG Sligo
6 SWAN LAKE
One of the most enduringly popular ballets of all time, and written for the Bolshoi Ballet, Swan Lake has it all – gloriously rich and memorable music by Tchaikovsky, an achingly romantic fairy-tale story, and choreography which succeeds in capturing all of the elegance of one of nature's most graceful creatures. 7 MACALLA NA HEIREANN
The annual Comhaltas music tour of Ireland stops in Ceolaras Coleman, Gurteen, on Saturday from 8.30pm. Offering musicians, singers and dancers. Tickets from 071 9182599.
8 TRADES CLUB
An exhibition by Seamus Nolan, titled The Trades Club Revival, opens this Saturday at 5pm in The Model. This is a retrospective of the project and features essays by contemporary cultural theorists, Dave Beech, Francis McKee and Nolan himself. It also includes memorabilia associated with the club's extensive history. The Trades Club operated for more than 100 years on Castle Street. It closed in 2006, but thanks to The Model, Art's Council, Nolan and the club's committee members, it reopened in 2010.
9 GRAFFITI FUN
The unmissable, Graffiti Classics comes to The Model on Sunday at 12.30pm for a performance that will provide an exciting alternative to the String Quartet. This will be an all-singing, all-dancing, comedy cabaret extravaganza for all ages.
10 MUSIC MAKERS
The Music Makers, the Craft of Music on Tour, comes to the Hawk's Well tomorrow, Wednesday at 8pm. This is a multimedia music-and-film performance, celebrating the creativity and skill involved in traditional music-making. In the show, live music is interwoven with film footage of the craft workers as they fashion the instruments being played. Tickets from 071 9161518.
