The Sligo Europe Direct Information Centre is to open at the Community Library.

Marian Harkin MEP will launch the new facility at 4pm on Friday.

The Teach Laighne Centre is the contact point for all queries on the EU for counties Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo.

Pauline Brennan, Senior Executive Librarian said: "The aim is to promote informed debate and active European citizenship by providing EU information tailored to meet the needs of the local community."

With 2013 designated the European Year of Citizens, it is planned to host a number of events and activities at the Centre.

These will focus on European citizens and their rights.

Services at the Centre include free phone access to the Europe Direcct contact centre, free access to European Union related websites and information leaflets.

There is also information for schools.

This features a brief introduction to the EU for primary pupils to more academic-based material for second level students.

School classes and other groups are welcome to visit the Centre.
