Tourism opening at closed Garda station

Retired Garda Eugene MacHale talking to Garda Louis Moran, outside Cliffoney Garda Station when it closed last January.

THE community of Cliffoney is hoping to use the recently closed Garda station as a tourism centre.

The lastest meeting of the County Council heard local Fine Gael councillor Hubert Keaney is supporting the project.

Clr Patsy Barry proposed the council call on Minister Brian Hayes to give the local community first offer of the station.

But Clr. Barry warned: "There is now legislation which means the garda station will go for sale on the open market."

Clr. Keaney responded: "We have contacted the minister.

"He is in reasonable disposition toward a proposal for use of the station by a local project that is community oriented.

"I am pretty sure we can deliver the Cliffoney Garda Station back to the community."

Clr. Barry said: "Maith an fear."

Clr. Jude Devins suggested the council should write to the minister asking for a timeline.
