Sligo gearing up for renewal of Operation Transformation

SLIGO IS set to play its part in the Operation Transformation project by staging a special walk on Saturday, January 19.

Hundreds of walkers took part in a similar event last year and the organisers are anticipating another huge turn out.

The 4k walk will follow a route from Kennedy Parade along Sligo's attractive waterfront at the Garavogue River and on through Doorly Park.

'People of all ages and fitness levels are welcome on the day and it would be great to see families getting involved', says Deirdre Lavin of the Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership.

The walk is part of an initiative by the Irish Sports Council, Local Sports Partnerships and RTE's Operation Transformation programme to encourage people to follow a healthy lifestyle in 2013

The television programme, which is presented by Kathryn Thomas, pictured, goes out on RTE tonight and will run for seven weeks. The project will also feature on John Murray's radio show.

Last year, over 600 walkers stepped it out for the Sligo event and already the indications are that this year's walk will be even more successful.

'Let's show the nation how active we are in Sligo. It's a great way to put those New Year resolutions into action", says Deirdre Lavin.
