Works have begun to rectify the significant storm damage to pathways at Rosses Point beach.

The ferocious Storm Brigid wreaked havoc in February when it destroyed access to the beach.

Tom Kilfeather, director of services at Sligo County Council said that no funding has yet been received for the works and the council had to start regardless.

He said: "There needs to be access in place ahead of the summer season, or else the beach will lose its Blue Flag.

"Works have begun on the main beach.

"We estimate the cost to be in the region of €30,000.

"The application has gone in for funding but we couldn't wait as summer is fast approaching.

"We are hopeful that the funding will follow."

He added that without proper access in place, it remained dangerous for beach users and it was the council's priority to make the pathway safe.
