Ballygawley's Patricia Armstrong has been named Connacht Mum of the Year in a recent competition.

The 49-year-old was a marathon runner until she discovered a degenerative disc in her back.

Despite numerous surgeries, her condition was complicated due to spinal stenosis, which compresses the nerves.

This means Patricia is in constant pain and doctors discovered that this has left her with nerve damage in her legs.

She was adamant not to let this stop her charity endeavours though.

She became involved in the Outreach Moldova scheme 10 years ago, she later travelled to the country and volunteered in an orphanage there.

Although she was suffering with her back condition, she managed to volunteer for seven years in Moldova.

She now helps with the North West Hospice.

Positivity and Patricia seem to go together.

She said: "I can find something good in everything, I think you have to."

She is also supporting her daughter, Lorraine, who is on a kidney transplant waiting list.

Patricia added: "Lorraine got married two years ago, she was only home from the honeymoon three weeks and she was diagnosed with total kidney failure, so both her kidneys are gone."

Patricia was nominated for the mum of the year awards through her friend, Michelle Meehan.

The awards, now in their eleventh year, were organised in 2014 by Womans Way and Lidl Ireland.

Olivia Duffy from Drogheda was crowned the overall winner, while Keith Duffy's wife, Lisa scooped the celebrity mum of the year title.
