Published 01/01/2013 | 11:52

THE HOME of 1916 Proclamation signatory, Sean MacDiarmada, whose name was given to Sligo railway station on the 50th anniversary of the Eastern Rising, is to be restored.

A sum of €30,000 has just been spent by the Office of Public Works on re-thatching and some structural works on the property at Kiltyclogher, where MacDiarmada was born in February, 1884.

And, the Minister of State Brian Hayes, who has responsibility for the OPW, has said there is an obligation on his Department to maintain the historical site in view of the upcoming centenary of 1916 in three years time.

Sligo/ North Leitrim Senator, Michael Comiskey, has welcomed this commitment. He said: "I will continue to work with Minister Hayes to preserve and promote MacDiarmada's residence as the 1916 centenary approaches."
