Luiz Fernando Zago, a student in the college, is fronting a business collaboration between IT Sligo and an innovation centre in his hometown, Luzerna.

Luiz has been a guest at a string of business conferences on both sides of the Atlantic in the past year.

He said: "It was a great year in Sligo.

"In academic terms and professionally, I achieved a lot of things."

He came to IT Sligo last September from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, which is one of the most prestigious public universities in Brazil.

Recently the Luzerna Mayor, Moisés Diersmann, visited IT Sligo to sign the business partnership, where he was welcomed by President Terri Scott and Mayor Marcella McGarry.

Luiz added: "I see Ireland as a gateway to the European market.

"What I wanted to do was to create an opportunity for companies here in Sligo to have representation in Brazil which would make it easier for them in terms of exporting and trying to reach South American markets."

Luiz is returning to IT Sligo in November to complete an honours degree in Marketing.
