A 55-year-old man "hit the drink" after his wife left him, Sligo District Court was told.
Summoned for being intoxicated at Rockwood Parade on December 9th was Bernard Ward, Ballydrehid, Ballisodare.
Ward was arrested at 6.50pm after he observed in a highly drunk state, sitting on a footpath and unable to stand or give his name. He also had a cut to his head. Mr. Tom MacSharry, solicitor (defending), pleaded that Ward's wife left him in early December for a few days and he hit the drink as a result.
However, they had now reconciled and there was "a quiet, peaceful Christmas."
Ward was thankful to the Gardai for arresting him for his own safety.
The defendant, who had seven previous convictions, was fined €200 for being intoxicated in a public place.
