THE HSE has confirmed it is to appeal a Labour Court ruling to reinstate a doctor at Sligo General Hospital.

The contract of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Raouf Sallam was terminated in August, 2011.

A 'Save Dr Sallam' campaign followed with patients and supporters taking to the streets to demonstrate against the HSE's decision not to renew his contract.

Dr Sallam took a case to the Rights Commissioner.

He claimed various infringements of the terms of the Fixed-Term Work Act on the part of the HSE.

His claims were rejected.

Dr Sallam then appealed the decision to the Labour Court.

The Court ruled that his contract should be reinstated.

In a statement, the HSE said that while it did not comment on individual cases, it confirmed it had lodged an appeal in relation to the Labour Court judgement regarding Dr Sallam.
