Homecoming celebration

Jessica Farry

Mona McSharry returned home to Sligo this weekend with the gold and bronze medals won at the World Junior Championships in the United States, mere weeks after she was crowned European champion.

Friends, family members, local well-wishers, politicians and more travelled to the North Sligo village of Grange to give Mona the welcome home that she deserved.

Hundreds turned up to celebrate Mona's outstanding achievements representing Ireland.

Mona may have only returned home over the weekend, but it was back to school yesterday for the 17-year-old, as the new school year got underway.

Mona picked up a gold in the 100m Breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 50m Breaststroke.

That adds to her 2017 medal haul which already includes a European 100m Breaststroke gold, 50m Breaststroke gold and silver in the 200m Breaststroke.
