Filan brothers' ambitious plans rejected

A PLAN by Westlife star Shane Filan and his brother Finbarr to build 42 houses at Carraroe has been shot down by An Bord Pleanala.
The decision is the result of an appeal by the brothers' company Shafin Developments Ltd.
Sligo County Council had refused permission for the project in September 2011.
Now, An Bord Pleanala has found the development would be contrary to the Sligo and Environs Development Plan. The board also pointed out that the site was not currently served by public sewerage facilities and that the project would therefore there be premature.
It also added that the proposed site was prone to flooding, especially at one end where there is a turlough or disappearing lake.
Shafin had planned to demolish an existing stable and build 42 twostorey four-bedroom detached houses on a 7.5 hectare site.
Access would have been off the Carraroe/Ballisodare road and the Ballygawley road.
Although the current economic climate might have put paid to the Development in any event, An Bord Pleanala's decision was not an outright rejection of Shafin's plan.
In a note for its decision, it said that limited scale development might be accommodated.
