AN 18-YEAR old Boyle lad has been hailed a hero after rescuing his two younger neighbours from drowning.

Daniel Hughes, from Tobar Padraig, was teaching his younger brother, Adam, to swim, in the Boyle River, near Assylinn.

Then, he heard screaming from downstream.

Amy McDermott and Reece Shanley, both 13, had got into difficulty.

Daniel, a pupil of Abbey Community College in Boyle, said: "I saw them struggling to keep themselves above water.

"I just swam over as fast as I could.

"Amy was in the worst state so I grabbed her.

"I helped Reece over to the side of the river and I told him grab onto a rock.

"I then clutched Amy, she put her arms around my shoulders and managed to get her out. It all happened so fast."

According to local web site 'Real Boyle', a "potential disaster was averted thanks to Daniel's bravery.

His mother, Lindsey, told The Sligo Champion he was being "very modest" about what he did.

She added: "He is trying to play it down.

"He said he was just there."

He told her it could have been worse, there could have been two deaths.

To which Lindsey quickly responded: "It could have been three."

She said: "As a mother, I think it's great he did it.

"But I would prefer it had been someone else."

She said her son did not have time to think about it.

But once or twice he became afraid.

That happened when Amy, trying to pull herself up out of the water, pushed him under.

Lindsey said that after the rescue, he just came home, changed his clothes, dried himself and went out to play football in what's locally known as 'the Pleasure Grounds' in Boyle.

Amy's mother, Florence Murphy, told The Sligo Champion: "Thank God he was there.

"He done absolutely brilliant."
