AT the first meeting of Sligo municipal council yesterday, newly elected Cathairleach Tom MacSharry described Lissadell re-opening as 'huge'.
He said: "I think that the re-opening of Lissadell House could also be the catalyst for flagship projects in Sligo.
"I want to acknowledge the very positive comments from owners Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy that they want to leave the past where it belongs - in the past."
Councillor Declan Bree added: "This is wonderful news, Lissadell is a significant tourist destination both in Sligo and the Northwest in general."
Councillor Sean MacManus said that it was a wonderful move for Sligo.
He said: "The opening is a good thing to see for a number of reasons for Sligo as a county.
"I welcome the Walsh Cassidy decision and salute whoever worked in the background," he added.
Councillor Hubert Keaney described the re-opening as being part of the spark for Sligo.
Councillor Thomas Healy said that he was delighted with the news, saying that it was an extremely positive move.
Councillor Rosaleen O' Grady said that she wanted to acknowledge the involvement of county manager Ciaran Hayes.
"Lissadell is a jewel in the crown for Sligo, it is wonderful to have it open again, this was not done without a lot of people and I think that it is important to acknowledge that.
