Council tenants facing rent hike

COUNTY COUNCIL tenants are facing rent rises in the New Year.

The Council's budget adopted last week shows rental income will be increased from €2,060,000 to €2,250,000, a rise of 12.5%.

Councillor Declan Bree criticised the move and also pointed out the money for maintenance has been slashed from €437,000 to €100,000.

Clr. Bree said this will barely allow for emergency repairs.

"A portion of the rent they are paying is supposed to cover the cost of maintenance. However, less than 4% of the rent collected from council tenants will be used for maintenance," he said.

Clr. Bree stressed the Council had an obligation to maintain council housing to a proper standard.
