A decision by Polish manufacturers to increase its prices has led to a steep rise in the cost of a bag of coal.

Over the past week the average price of both smokeless and bituminous coal has risen sharply but according to Sligo coal merchants, R & L W Hunter Limited, prices should stabilise for the remainder of this year.

A bituminous bag of coal has gone up by ?2.50 a bag while a bag of smokeless has risen by ?1.

Declan Caslin, manager of R & L W Hunted Limited, told The Sligo Champion that coal manufacturers across a range of mines in Poland have upped prices so this was being passed on.

Manufacturers were blaming the cost of energy worldwide as the reason for hiking up the prices.

“We are hopeful that the current prices will hold for the rest of this year,” said Mr. Caslin.
