A NEW Alzheimer Cafe is coming to Sligo.
It's the first of its kind in the North West and will be launched in The Glasshouse on Friday next.
The Alzheimer Cafe is free and open to anyone affected by dementia.
People previously or newly diagnosed, those worried about memory loss, family and friends can all 'drop in.' The cafe will be open in The View Bar from 11am to 1pm.
Dr. Geraldine McCarthy, Consultant Psychiatrist of old age at Liscarney House, Pearse Road, is the first guest speaker. She will provide an information session. "This is an ideal opportunity for people to meet those in a similiar situation to themselves, have a chat and learn more," said Majella O'Donnell of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
The Alzheimer Cafe will return on the second Friday of each month and the next one is on December 14th. The Sligo cafe will be the third in the country. The others are in Donnybrook and Glasnevin and all are run in the same way.
"Basically, it's an open house. People can drop in and drop out as they wish. We will have a different speaker each month," Majella said.
