ABBOTT employees have swapped their lab coats for spades to help restore sand dunes at Rosses Point beach. The environmentally aware workers joined the clean coasts programme this year and focused on the Blue Flag beach in Sligo.

Their first project involved marram grass planting in an exposed area on the dunes. Some 18 volunteers carried out a half a day's work replanting.

The group learned about the fragile dunes system and the important part marram grass plays in its protection.

Support was also given by Sligo County Council which supplied spades and secured the replanted area with chestnut fencing.

The group hopes to organise more clean ups along the Sligo coastline and also to organise a coastal bird watching outing for volunteers.

Abbott Diagnostics was been named Coastcare Business of the Year for its efforts.
