DESPITE PREVIOUS fears, the Ballymote branch of the Ulster Bank is not among those to he closed.
A total of 22 branches and suboffices across the country are to be shut, 11 in the North and 11 in the Republic. None of them are in Sligo. There was relief all-round in Ballymote at the news, where locals had been confident the branch, which has a long and successful history in the town, would remain open.
A number of sources had told The Sligo Champion they did not believe the Ballymote branch would be shut.
Located in a prime location on top of The Rock, the branch attracts custom and business from over a wide area.
The bank is also the owner of its premises. Ballymote Business Association member Aidan Tighe said: "We would be terribly concerned if it did close but I would be very surprised they would close a thriving branch like Ballymote."
Bank of Ireland also has a branch in Ballymote.
