Thomas scoops Garda award

A 17-YEAR-OLD Ballymote student with special education needs has scooped a Garda Community Award.

Thomas Furey, a Leaving Certificate Applied 2 pupil at Corran College, was the Ballymote District winner.

In November last, Thomas entered a national competition-The Michael Sweetman Trust.

It is opened to all LCA2 students in Education and Training Board schools throughout the country.

Thomas picked the 'National Lottery' as his topic.

He was required to give an oral presentation and interview.

He was awarded an all expenses trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg after impressing the judges. Thomas said he was "thrilled" to pick up the Garda Youth Achievement accolade.

Corran College Principal, John McGovern, said: "This is an outstanding achievement.

"Thomas is a wonderful example of the success of integrating students with special education needs into mainstream education."

Thomas was joined by his parents Bernard and Martina and brother Eoghan in receiving his award from the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Councillor Pat McGrath.
