Kind-hearted Hugh raises thousands for local support group

Sligo man Hugh Cunningham took it upon himself to raise funds for a Parents and Toddler Support Group, Little Gems and last week donated €3,300 to the facility.

The support group is for children with special needs. Spokeswoman Niamh O'Driscoll, a parent who has used the group says: "Hugh Cunningham held a fundraising evening in Corballa in April and raised money that he donated to a Cancer charity and to Little Gems Parent and Toddler Support Group.

"Little Gems was set up by parents with the help of community facilitators from the Early Intervention team of the HSE.

"Originally we met monthly and also ran days out in the Summer and organised parties at Christmas and Easter. However, due to many factors, attendance at the monthly sessions decreased but efforts have been made recently to start up the group again. "

"This donation of €3300 couldn't have come at a better time for the group and we are very grateful to Hugh."

The cheque presentation was made at Nazareth House last Wednesday where Little Gems hold their meetings.
