Ballymote Tidy Towns and Tourism

Ballymote Tidy Towns and Tourism Ltd. were pleased to see the pupils and teachers of Corran College and Colaiste Mhuire out on Friday 11th April spring cleaning their school grounds and adjacent areas as part of the National Spring-clean. This is a progression of the "Adopt a Spot" project from last year and other groups, business and sporting are encouraged to clean and litter pick their grounds and adjacent areas.

APRIL SPRING CLEANING

Ballymote Tidy Towns and Tourism Ltd. were pleased to see the pupils and teachers of Corran College and Colaiste Mhuire out on Friday 11th April spring cleaning their school grounds and adjacent areas as part of the National Spring-clean. This is a progression of the "Adopt a Spot" project from last year and other groups, business and sporting are encouraged to clean and litter pick their grounds and adjacent areas.

Our committee wish to congratulate and compliment the pupils, teachers and principals of both schools on this wonderful initiative. This is our shared environment and we encourage all to follow this lead.

PLAYGROUND/MINI TRAIN

We would like to raise Community awareness to the present state of Playground area and all the Playground equipment in the Town Park. It is badly in need of paint and repair. The area needs a complete clean up. Some of the amenities, i.e swings, etc need replacing.

In order to raise the necessary funds, we will be organising several fundraising events in the coming weeks but we need your help and support. There will be a cake sale in the Pastoral Centre on Easter Sunday 20th April 2014, directly after 11.30am mass. All are welcome and all donations will be greatly appreciated. Please support. Thank you. We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Easter.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Congratulations to the U-12 Contemporary Irish Dance Group who are now through to the National Finals in August in Athlone. The dance group members are Laoise King, Kate Brehony,Eimear Kerins, Ellen Langton. We wish them every success in the Finals.

YOUTH CLUB

The Ballymote Family Resource Centre Youth Club for 10 to 12 year-old children is being switched from Fridays at 6.30pm to Wednesday evenings at 8.00pm at Ballymote Family Resource Centre starting on 30th April following the Easter break. For more information contact Claire at 071-9197818.

CELEBRITY JIGS N REELS

Coolaney/Mullinabreena GAA Club presents "Celebrity Jigs n Reels 2014" on April 20th, Easter Sunday night in the Sligo Park Hotel. 12 couples will dance the night away in a bid to become Champions of the dance floor. Tickets are €15, family tickets are also available. Tickets available on the night. Doors open at 7.30pm. Show starts at 8.30pm.

KING HOUSE EVENT

After a very successful tour, Mikel Murfi returns with his heart-warming play to King House, Boyle on Friday April 25th, Titled "The Man in the Woman's Shoes, this play was written by Sligo actor and playwright Mikel Murfi, after he embarked on a project with members of Active Age Groups throughout Sligo.

The show pays tribute to the wonderful stories he heard and characters he met and learned of plenty of whom you will immediately recognise from every town the length and breadth of the country. Pre-booking is advisable.

PIKE ANGLING FESTIVAL

Boyle and District Angling club will be holding their Pike Angling Festival taking place at Lough Key, Boyle on Saturday April 19th and 20th. First prize €2,500 plus Moonstone Jewellers Perpetual Cup: second prize €1,500: third prize €750. There are also prizes for ladies and paid up members. LOTTO DRAW

Geevagh Community Resource Group Lotto Draw was held in Des McDonagh's on Saturday, April 5th and there was one winner of the jackpot which was €5200. The numbers drawn were 3, 11, 15 and 19. The winner was David McTiernan, Carrownadargney. The jackpot next week will be €1000 and the draw will be held in Paddy's Bar.

DANCE FITNESS CLASS

A brand new dance fitness class continues in Geevagh Resource Centre on Monday nights at 9pm. FITSTEPS is the new dance fitness phenomenon taking the country by storm and is devised by the Strictly Come Dancing Team. It is inspired by the jive, foxtrot, waltz, quickstep and many more. For fun and fitness and plenty of laughs, come along on the night. Adults and teens are welcome.

TABLE QUIZ

A Table Quiz will be held in Shivnan's Bar, Ballyfarnon on Holy Thursday night at 9.30pm. All proceeds are in aid of Mellon Educate and is promoted by Kevin Morison. All support will be gratefully appreciated.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations and good wishes are extended to Bernie O'Hara, Doon East, Gurteen who participated on the Winning Streak programme last Saturday night. Happy spending Bernie.

RECENT DEATH

The death took place in her 95th year at Oakwood Nursing Home on April 8thof Philomena (Ena) Surlis (nee Sherlock) Shroof, Monasteraden. News of her passing was received with great sadness in the Community where she was well-liked and respected. Her remains reposed at Kilgarriff's Funeral Home Ballaghaderreen and were removed to St. Aiden's Church Monasteraden on last Wednesday evening.

After her Funeral Mass on Thursday burial took place in Monasteraden Cemetery. Predeceased by her husband John she is survived by her daughter Geraldine, sons Terence and John, son -in-law John, daughters -in- law Ethna and Anne, grandchildren Joseph, Christopher, Richard and Roisin many relatives and friends

CONFIRMATION

The sacrament of Confirmation was administered by Bishop Brendan Kelly in St. Patrick's Church, Gurteen on last Sunday April 6 . There were twenty eight young people for the sacrament.

The Mass of the Lord's Supper will be in Gurteen Church at 8.30pm in Cloonloo at 7pm and in Killaraght at 8pm.

TABLE QUIZ

Gurteen tidy town committee are holding a table quiz in the Crossbar, Gurteen on Thursday 17th April at 10 pm sharp to raise funds for their Gurteen enhancement project. Tables of 4, €40 per table. It is to be welcomed that Gurteen village are involved in the tidy towns project so support would be very important.

EASTER CEREMONIES

The Easter Triduum will take place in St Kevin's Church Keash commencing with Mass of the last supper on Holy Thursday night at 8pm. The celebration of the Lord's Passion will be at 3pm on Good Friday and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night will be at 9pm. The Sunday Masses in both Churches will be at the usual times.

Eucharistic Ministers will renew their commitments on Holy Thursday night and pupils from the class preparing for Confirmation will be the Apostles for the washing of the feet.

CEMETERY MASSES

The annual cemetery Masseswill take place in Knockbrack cemetery on Wednesday July 30th at 8pm and in Templevanny cemetery on Friday September 5th at 8pm.

QUIZ CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to Culfadda NS Quiz Team of Aisling and orla Dorrian, Ronan Dwyer and Mina Ryan who took part in the national credit union final in Dublin on Sunday last. The team finished with a very high score and well done to their team coach Ms Mc Grath who prepared them for the event.

TROPHY WINNER

Congratulations to Rachel Hannon representing Culfadda NS who won first prize in the place kicking final competition in Markievicz Park Sligo last Sunday week.

AMIGO FINALISTS

The Culfadda Amigos team of Matt Henry, Cormac Kielty. Michael Kielty McManemy and Eoghan Higgins gave an amazing performance at Summerhill College on April 3rd. They finished joint first with a full score but were beaten on a time difference of just two seconds.

CONGRATULATIONS

James McGettrick, Cushla Cosgrove and Aine Higgins won first place in the "Write a book" competition run by Sligo Education Centre. All of the pupils from Ms McGrath's and Ms Dwyer's classes took part by writing designing and binding their own creative story. Well done to all.

CAKE SALE

A huge Cake Sale takes place this coming Easter Saturday, 19th April in the 'Cake Sale pop up shop' of McCarricks shop in Teeling Street.'

This is a fundraiser for the Forest Walk Development and a huge variety of cakes, breads, buns and treats will be available - all baked courtesy of the many talented bakers in and around Tubbercurry.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get unique tasting home baking at its best.

SYMPATHY

Sympathy is extended to Margaret Gilmartin and her husband Gerry and their extended family on the recent death of Margaret's sister Josephine Cullen, of Floughena Doocastle. Josephine had been ill for some time. Burial took place in Doocastle Cemetary. May she rest in peace.

CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

South Sligo Cancer support group meeting takes place in the old Parochial House on the first Wednesday night of every month - the next meeting is tomorrow night 2nd April at 8pm.

BOOKWORMS IN APRIL

Irish writer Claire Keegan's story, Foster, is Bookworm's choice for April. The group are eager to read this highly-praised author's novel and will discuss it Thursday 17 April 12-1pm in Tubbercurry Library. If you are a book lover, here is one to try and remember the library have copies available.

CYCLE FUNDRAISER

A large group of cyclists are undertaking a charity cycle from the Aviva stadium to the site of the proposed new South Sligo community park in Tubbercurry on the June bank holiday weekend.

South Sligo community park Ltd. has recently submitted an application under the capital sports grant scheme to develop sports facilities on their site in Tubbercurry. The cyclists are made up of representatives of local business,local amateur cyclists, members of South Sligo Athletic club as well as underage coaches and senior players with Real Tubber FC. This represents a great local commitment to this facility.

Local top amateur cyclist and RAS competitor Donal Harrington will talk about preparing for the event as well as outlining some training plans. Donal will be joining us on the cycle.

Garys cycles, Sligo have come on board to assist with technical support over the two days and will also be in attendance on the night. Sponsorship cards will be available on the night. See www.southsligoac.net/south-sligo-community-park.html
