There are six Sligo volunteers travelling to South Africa on Friday as part of the Niall Mellon township trust. The group – Jean Gallagher, Joseph Davey, Darragh Fallon, Sean Fowely, John McDermott and Mary Heeran – are going for a week.
Jean, a nurse from Tubbercurry, is volunteering with the group for a fourth time. She said: "We are going to Kolstad, which is over in the Eastern Cape. We will be building pre schools for younger children and education centres. It is a week where you meet a variety of people from all walks of life, everyone is all on the same road. I first went over in 2008, after hearing about it from a friend."
She said the roles on the projects vary. "You meet all types of people, it is a great experience. We nearly get as much out of it."
