Welcome boost for local pubs
Hard-pressed Sligo pubs are bracing themselves for a World Cup bonanza.
"Pubs throughout the town and county are hoping to score big time," says Enda Scanlon, a member of the Sligo Vintners Executive.
With several games timed for 8pm and 11pm, soccer fans are expected to soak up the big match atmosphere in their local pubs.
"The World Cup will kick off what we hope will be an extremely busy summer," says Enda.
His two pubs, Fiddler's Creek and the Village Inn in Cartron, will be doing special promotions.
And most pubs throughout the county will follow suit.
"It's a great opportunity to boost business," Enda maintains.
"Soccer fans love to get involved in the atmosphere of the big games and where better to do that than in the local pub."
Special prices on beers, free finger food, draws and lotteries are among the promotions planned at pubs around the county.
"We're running a lottery draw for our customers," says Enda.
"We'll give out prizes for a number of novel events, such as the lowest scorers and the first team eliminated.
"In that way, everybody will have a chance of joining in the fun.
"Even though Ireland aren't involved, there's a great buzz building up in advance of the World Cup.
"Everybody knows the pub trade has been going through a difficult time.
"Now we have a chance to boost business during the World Cup.
"We anticipate a big increase in trade on week nights with a significantly higher level of business over week-ends during the World Cup."
